Ah... the Dorado, the golden one, the mean green fighting machine. A truly amazing gamefish to target on a Cabo San Lucas fishing charter. It's one of our favorite fish species. They run, they jump, they light up brighter than the Times Square christmas tree. Part Vegas showgirl with a day-glo paint job... part rodeo bull who won't be broke... the Dorado is built for a battle and flavored for the table. These aggressive, fast-growing wonders hold a special place in our hearts and fortunately for us, they hold a special place in theirs for Cabo. When they come our way, the last thing we want to do is miss an opportunity to hook another. We've got a few tips for you Dorado fishermen, something we call "5 Golden Rules" – put them in play when trolling for Dorado and you'll see they work.
RULE #1 - ALWAYS BE READY
Wow boss, that's some great advice there. Have anything less complicated? Truth is, this is the rule, that when broken, leads to the most lost fish. We're not saying that you have to fix your eyes on the spread and rods every minute of the day. Just stay alert and listen for the sound of the clicker, then act fast.
RULE #2 - PICK A SIDE
Seldom are you fishing alone, you've got friends, right? Do your friends, and yourself, a favor. Pick a side, and by that we mean choose one side of the boat, or the other. Let's say there's 3 of you on board. You take the left-side rods, another takes the right. The third man can take the center. When a reel starts singing, there's no confusion about whose going to take the rod. Now, go get your fish!
RULE #3 - FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT
By that we don't mean playing by the Marquis of Queensberry's rules. We mean fight in a way that brings more Dorado to your boat... and that's the 'good' we're referring to. Horse a Dorado in as quickly as you can and you've cost yourself one of those "Golden" opportunities... the very realistic chance that there are lots more fish right behind yours. Keep the pressure on your fish and bring it in slowly. His buddies are wondering what the heck he's doing and will often come take a closer look.
RULE #4 - FEED THE HUNGRY
While we're all with helping the needy, the hungry in this case are those "buddies" we just talked about. They're really not so interested in what your fish is doing as you slowly bring him in, they're much more interested in what he's eating. What's the right thing to do? Feed him! Remember the two other guys on your boat? Right about now they should be standing there with a pitch-bait rig at the ready. When they spot your fish, and see his friends, toss them a little lunch... keep it in free-spool and be ready for a hook-up.
That's it. Those are our "5 Golden Rules." Simple tactics, that when followed, will no doubt up your catches of this awesome game fish and increase the level of fun your trips offer up. We've got loads more things to teach you, so what are you waiting for, book a charter with Pochos Charters and give yourself the gift of gold!
